It´s considered by far the most touristic area in Thailand, and also one of the most visited spots in the world. Koh Phi Phi is formed by 4 different islands (Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh, Koh Yung and Koh Phi) and it´s located in the Krabi Province.
The area Maya Bay is closed until 2021 due to the massive tourism that is affecting the invorement. Koh Phi Phi became a much more popular destination after its appearance on the movie “The Beach”. This are suffered very serious damages after the tsunami of 2004.
🚜 2) Tuk Tuks
Nowadays you can get a ride on a Tuk Tuk in almost every country, but what you may not know is that their origin is from Thailand. There are Tuk Tuks made in Thailand and others made in India, and they are both exported to countries from all over the world like Germany or Switzerland.
Going for a ride on a Tuk Tuk is a must when you visit the capital of Thailand, as it´s the best way to experience their atmosphere, their streets and their crowded traffic. Plus, Tuk Tuks are one of the iconic things in Thailand
Although these three-wheeled cars are like a tourist attraction in the present, they are also used by locals, but it´s true that now taxis are cheaper than the Tuk Tuks.
🤑 3) Cheap Prices of Thailand
When you are talking about What is Thailand most known for, you can´t forget that Thailand is on the top 5 list of best and cheapest places to live in the world? That´s right, no matter if you pick a popular city like Chiang Mai or Bangkok, or if you decide to go for a less crowded city, you will always have cheap prices.
Imagine how cheap is living in Thailand, that a majority of the Digital Nomads choose this country for their residency. There is good Wi-Fi connection all over the country.
Renting an apartment may cost you between 400-500$ per month, having a meal at a street place may cost you between 1-2$, public buses cost about 0,30$. There are certain places where you will be able to live perfectly well with just a 600$ salary.
☸️ 4) Buddhism, monks and temples
Thailand is famous for being one of the most important Buddhism countries, you will see their religion represented everywhere all over the country. Around 94% of Thailand´s population is Buddhist.
There are about 300.000 monks in all Thailand, which means you will see people dressing in orange robes all the time. Monks are highly respected in Thailand, for example, you may find signs in the train that tell you to offer them your sit.
Last of all, you may have realised that temples are very famous in Thailand, and that´s just a way of representing the importance of their religious culture. There are more than 41.000 temples in Thailand. Always keep in mind that you have to be very respectful if you go inside one of them.
🏯 5) The White Temple
We needed to add the White Temple on our “What is Thailand known for?” list, as it has been one of the most visited tourist attractions in Thailand during the last years.
The White Temple is also known as Wat Rong Khun and although it wasn´t so popular before, due to the massive tourism in Chiang Mai in the last years, all the instagrammers and photographers made this place viral and now it´s a top destination in Thailand.
It´s a private art shown with the style of a Buddhist temple, it was built in 19997 and a curious fact about it, is that it was designed and funded by the same person: Chalermchai Kositpipat
🛌 6) Thai Massages
Another of the things Thailand is famous for, are the Thai massages, which are so popular than now you can even find specific Thai massages centres in other countries of Europe and America.
When talking about Thai massages, you will find all kinds of them. Starting from the ones that are really cheap made in local shops for just 5$, to the expensive ones where you go to a luxury hotel and spend days receiving these massages.
Thai massages are popular for being more intense, they are based on stretching you out with specific positions and balance the energy of your body (Less relaxed treatments, but very effective)
🚤 7) Floating Markets
There is probably nothing more impressive and unique from Thailand than their narrow canals with large boats where they sell foods and goods of all kinds. That´s right these are known as floating markets and although they are famous in more countries of Asia, seeing them In Thailand is something very different and special.
Floating markets were created in Thailand because a while ago what today is a road with many street markets, in the past was a jungle and the only way to move around and sell your products was by boat. Nowadays (although it´s not so necessary anymore), it has stablished as a way of selling things, plus is a major tourist attraction for tourists.
Not so far from Bangkok (about 1 hour away), you will find Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, which is the most touristy and famous floating market in Thailand. Visiting it is a must, but it´s so touristy that we advise you to visit other ones like Bang Kachao.
🐘 8) Animal abuse in Thailand
It´s sad to mention this on a list of popular things about Thailand, but it´s true, this country is known for two things, for having a huge wildlife diversity and for abusing animals by caging and exporting them to other countries, or with “fake” sanctuaries that take their liberty away from them.
If you go to Thailand and they offer you elephant rides, or petting any weird and endemic animal from Thailand, please say no to them and report it, as these things are not only illegal, but also the main reason why the wildlife of Thailand is decreasing very fast.
There are many zoos in Thailand where animals are drugged to be less dangerous to humans. This causes them many diseases and also kills many of them, so please do not go to the zoos neither.
🍚 9) Thai street food
For many people, one of the best things about Thailand is their street food. Visiting the country, and not trying their delicious dishes at their food markets is a crime.
From pasta dishes to sweet Thai desserts or any other kind of Thai food, you will find all kind of dishes in the streets of Thailand. Eating street food is like going to a fast food restaurant in the US, absolutely everyone does it.
Some of the most popular street foods in Thailand are the Khao San Road (The favourite for tourists) or the Tom Yum Goong.
👨🌾 10) Thailand is famous for its friendly locals
Thailand is known as the land of smiles and you can imagine why right? Maybe having such a delicious food or so many paradise islands make their locals be happier, but the truth is that the people from Thailand are known for being one of the nicest.
As it happens with the people from Indonesia, Thailand locals have a carefree attitude, which means they don´t get stressed so much and enjoy life in a happier mood.
In general, Thai people will welcome you in the best way possible, the only thing they will require from you is to treat them nicely.
Other interesting facts about Thailand
These were some of the important things to know about Thailand, but there is much more information you should know before visiting this country.
Although not so many people know about them, next you will find some other curious facts about Thailand:
🕵 11) Scams
We told you about how nice the locals from Thailand are, but as it happens in every single country, there are always exceptions. Unfortunately, scams are one of those things related to Thailand.
The most typical scams are made by the “Tuk Tuk Mafia” which may be waiting at the Grand Palace or any other popular attraction to tell you that it´s closed, ad instead they will take you to a city tour around the shops (They get a commission from them). It´s also very common to get scammed by taxi drivers that will demand you a much higher rate than the real one.
Thailand has created a tourist police department where you can report the scams.
🚦 12) Crazy Traffic
One of the worst things about Thailand is its traffic. As soon as you get to the country (more if you arrive to Bangkok), you will realise that the traffic is crazy, imagine how it is, that it´s compared to India.
When a road is designed with 2 lanes, they convert it into 4 disorganized lanes, where Tuk Tuks and motorcycles are passing by the tiny spaces that are left.
If you are trying to go to the airport or somewhere far away, we recommend you travelling outside of the peak hours, as the traffic can make a huge difference of time when going from one place to another.
🍻 13) Parties and nightlife in Thailand
Due to the increase of tourism in Thailand during the last years, their parties and nightlife in general have become very popular as well. Bars, rooftop discos, and a huge quantity of nightclubs, there are all kind of places to enjoy the night in Thailand.
Khao San Road, Soi Ranbuttri and Full Moon Party are some of the favourite party destinations for travellers and for locals. Plus, these areas have a great atmosphere with street food places and night activities, so even if you are not much of a party person, you will be able to enjoy the epic nights of Thailand.
The one thing we recommend you is that although locals are very nice, you are still partying at a place where people don´t have much money, so always be careful with your stuff.
