China was the first country we visited in Asia, and as big Asia lovers that we are, we must recognize, China is one of our favorite countries. Because of it, choosing the 10 best places to visit in China has not been easy, plus, there are just too many options! Anyway, here is our list of most popular Chinese places, so let´s see what you think…
1)🧱 Great Wall of China
Of course, we had to start the list with the most popular place in China and one of the new 7 wonders of the world. The Great Wall is just impressive as what everyone says about it and just so you can have an idea of how huge it is, the wall covers up to 15 different regions/provinces.
Out of all of them, tourists usually visit the area closer to Beijing, but if you let us give you a tip, we would definitely recommend you trying to visit it from a different city, it is true they aren´t so well preserved, but not having the huge crowds around makes it worth it.
2)💂 Terracota army
Another one of the most famous tourist attractions in China, is the Terracota Army. Even though this historical archaeological site was discovered just a few decades ago, in 1974, it has become one of the most famous monuments of China and now a days, people from all over the world travel to Xi’an in China’s Shaanxi province only to see it.
The army has been lost for about 2000 years, but in despite of it, we must recognize, it still is in great conditions. One curious fact about these 8000 warriors, is that there is never a repeated copy.
3)⛰️ Mount Everest
Yes that´s right, nobody mentions it when talking about the Chinese famous places, but it is also in China and why not visiting it right?
As you may know, Mount Everest is considered the highest peak in the world with 8848 meters (29,029 ft.) and it is in the border between Nepal and China.
An interesting fact about Mount Everest, is that in despite of already being the tallest mountain in the world, it increases its height every year! This is due to the tectonic movement.
4)🏯 Forbidden city
Finally, in the number 4 we get to mention a famous landmark in China located in the capital, Beijing. Beijing is one of the most touristic cities in the countries and it of course deserved to a have a few spots in the list.
Forbidden city is with 720,000 square meters the largest wooden building complex in the world. There are also more than 1000 well preserved rooms that will help you picture what was the life like during the Ming Dynasty that lasted centuries.
In case you were wondering about where the name comes from, it is because no-one could enter or leave the palace without the emperor’s permission. Plus, this Chinese famous monument is so big that it was considered as a city inside the city.
5)🧘 Leshan Giant Buddha
Out of all the famous tourist spots in China, this might be one of the most impressive ones. The location itself is already pretty spectacular, as it is in the middle of three important Chinese rivers, named, Min River, Qingyi River, and Dadu River, but the most impressive moment comes when you get to see the statue.
The Leshan Giant statue is with 71-meter (233 ft) the biggest carved Buddha in the world. It started being built during the Tang Dynasty in the year 713 and it was finished in the 803, it took 90 years to make it!
6)🌇 The Bund
Although most of the famous sites in China are from hundreds, even thousands of years ago, there are also many modern places to see in China.
One of those famous locations, is the bund, considered as the Wall Street and financial center of Shanghai. Here you will be able to see the skyline of the city, which as you may know it´s incredible and it is almost as famous as the one in New York.
You will sure love this place if you are an architect lover, as the bund is home to all kind of styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical.
7)🏞️ Wulingyuan National Park
Most people believe this country is all about epic temples and monuments and it is indeed a very important part of the places you must visit in China, but you will be surprised to know how many incredible natural parks there are.
At Wulingyuan National Park you will be able to do all kind of activities, mountain climbing, photography, rafting, observing wildlife and of course hiking while admiring its epic sceneries.
Unfortunately, Wulingyuan has a but, which is that after the movie Avatar was released, it became too touristic and it is always crowded. Therefore, don´t expect it to be a tranquil natural place.
8)🚣 Yangtze River
Another of the most popular places to go in China is the Yangtze River. Flowing through 9 different provinces and over 6,300 kilometers, it isn´t just the longest river in China, but also in Asia and it even makes to the top 3 in the world, only after the Nile and the Amazon.
Other than being one of the coolest places to visit in China, thanks to the incredible landscapes it offers, the Yangtze also plays a very important role in China´s economy, as people from all over the country live from it.
9)🏰 Potala Palace
This stunning palaca/fortress located in Lhasa, in the autonomous region of Tibet is another of the most famous tourist places in china. It was the home to 10 different Dalai Lamas during almost 1000 years, since the 7th century, to 1959, when the current Dalai Lama was forced to leave Tibet.
Now a days, this historical Chinese site has been turned into a museum, where only 2700 people can visit each day. If you want to go, make sure to book your tickets a head of time.
An interesting fact about this palace is that it was built at an altitude of 3700m, making it the world’s highest ancient palace.
10)⛩️ Temple of heaven
Last of all and finishing with this list of the famous Chinese places, we are going back to Beijing. This time we are talking about the Temple of haven, an important landmark in Beijing, that is many times skipped when visiting the capital.
As photographers and film makers that we are, we must recognize, this famous spot in China, is one of the best to take photos, and that´s probably the reason why we love it so much. That said, don´t worry if you aren´t interested in photography, because it´s also very cool to see and it has a lot of history.
